German Aniversary Trip 2018

Mainz - Heidelberg Days 2-3

Heidelberg Germany – The best city to visit

Introduction

I’m a huge fan of Germany, although I’ve only traveled there once, but when it comes to picking a city to visit in the country, Heidelberg is my favorite. It’s a beautiful city with plenty to see and do, and it’s also home to some amazing history. Here are some reasons why you should add this place to your travel bucket list:

Heidelberg is located on the River Neckar in south-west Germany.

Heidelberg is a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg in south-west Germany. It’s located on the River Neckar, a tributary to the Rhine River. The Neckar is one of Germany’s most important rivers and a popular tourist attraction.

You can take your pick from several different methods of transportation when you visit Heidelberg. You can rent a car or bike, take public transportation or simply walk around town!

The city’s famous Heidelberg University is Germany’s oldest university.

Heidelberg University is Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. It has a long history of academic excellence, and its campus is home to over 30 Nobel Prize winners. Its medical school is particularly well-regarded and attracts students from around the world.

Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination due to its romantic cityscape, including Heidelberg Castle, the Philosophers’ Walk, and the baroque style Old Town.

  • Heidelberg Castle

  • Heidelberg University

  • Philosophers’ Walk

  • Old Town

It is on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.

Heidelberg is also on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. There are four reasons for that:

  • Heidelberg Castle (UNESCO since 1978) is a medieval castle and palatial complex. It consists of three parts: the Upper Castle, the Middle Castle and the Lower Castle. The city’s most famous landmark, it has been a key feature in paintings by masters like Rembrandt (1630), Philipp Otto Runge (1806) and Max Liebermann (1908).

  • The Old Bridge (Reinheim Bridge) was built between 1378 and 1418 to connect Heidelberg’s Old Town with its university district across the Neckar River. It has been called one of Germany’s most beautiful bridges because of its harmonious proportions that combine Gothic architecture with late Romanesque elements from 12th century church building traditions.

  • The Old University Building at Plönlein 8 houses Germany’s oldest university library (about 800 manuscripts), which opened in 1409 as well as a collection of historic maps dating back to 1576 created by Professor Matthias Schöner who lived during this time period between 1598–1650 when he died from disease while serving under Gustavus Adolphus who later became King Gustav II Adolf or Sweden during his reign which lasted until 1632 after he lost battles against Russia at Poltava 1709 where he was captured but later released due to political pressure applied by France whose king Louis XIV was his nephew through marriage; thus allowing him enough time without further conflictual engagements until 1715 when they finally met again near Gothenburg on land owned by Denmark-Norway after capitulating their position against England in order

Mark Twain wrote about his stay there in “A Tramp Abroad.”

Heidelberg is a city that must be seen. And if you can’t visit in person, then reading A Tramp Abroad (a book written by Mark Twain) will give you an idea of what it was like for him to live and study in Heidelberg.

He writes about enjoying the scenery, taking walks around town and eating at local restaurants. He also talks about how much he loves the beer!

The drive from Mainz to Heidelberg was only an hour or so. Our reservation was for Hotelo Heidelberg which was located to the southwest of the Altstadt (Old City). We arrived before check-in again, but luckily we were able to park the car, stash our bags at the hotel and walk to the Castle. It was an hour long walk from the hotel to the castle, but it gave us a great opportunity to see a bit more of the city.

Heidelberg was my second favorite city that we visited on our trip through Germany. Looking back, I wish we would have budgeted more time to explore there. A beautiful city, straddling both sides of the Neckar River, with the Altstadt on the south and the University on the north. It’s tough for me to describe how the city made me feel, it was almost fairytale-esque. I wish to return one day during Christmas to visit the Heidelberg Christmas Market.

Mark Twain wrote of the city:

“I have never enjoyed a view which had such a serene and satisfying charm,” he wrote in “A Tramp Abroad.” In the evening, Heidelberg became “a fallen Milky Way … its intricate cobweb of streets jeweled with twinkling lights.”

The castle offered a great vantage point to look at the town below. It was so picturesque. We spent some time touring the castle with a group. The castle was impressive and was built for
